Since its inception in 1988, The Mad Greek has become a Lawrence institution. The restaurant was founded by George and Peggy Kritos, whose commitment to quality Greek and Italian cuisine brought over two decades of success and economy to Massachusetts Street.
In 2014, in their much deserved retirement, George and Peggy passed along the legacy of The Mad Greek to their long-time family friends Theo and Deb Tagtalianidis. As the new owners, Deb and Theo promise the same passion and consistency as the Kritos family, while adding a Tagtalianidis flare.
Theo’s culinary contributions come from both his rich experience in the restaurant business, and his straight-from-the-village family recipes of Northern Greece, where both he and George are from. Deb, brings a flare for design, and marketing as a graduate of KU with a degree in design.
This historic Downtown Lawrence gem was built in 1880 and has been home to a variety of shops from 1883 through the 1900’s some of which included a millinery shop, a meat store, a grocery, a billiard hall, a lunch room, and even an undertaker. A number of bakeries occupied the site from 1915 through the 1980’s. After the first few years on 23rd street The Mad Greek moved to Mass. Street and has been calling this location home since 1993.
We invite you to sit back and relax, and enjoy a little bit of Greece right here in Historic Downtown Lawrence.
